When can your child fully understand answers about race?

by Candeise
(Dallas, OR)

I have an almost 9 year old biracial son. I am white, as well is my husband. His biological father has never been in the picture. We also have 4 other children that are also white. There has been some discussion over the years about his beautiful skin color and how he came to be, but other kids are starting to try and educate him on things I'm not sure how to handle.

My husband and I want him to be confident in who he is, however, the culture we live is white. I'm just curious about what is age-appropriate conversation. I want to be honest, but I don't want him to feel inferior. He has had some emotional issues, which may somewhat stem from his confusion. I want to talk to him without causing harm.
