Want to take my child off of medication for ADHD

My child is 10 years old and has been on ADHD medication since the age of 6. I have always had reservations about medicating my child but continue to do it because he is able to maintain friendships and function in a school setting. I am constantly thinking the long term effects of being on a narcotic can not be good. Is it something that is helping now but will later hurt?
