Understanding Enablers

Ok, so I have a soon to be 11 year old bonus daughter and a 16 year old bonus son. I never could have kids so this is a great chance. However their father chooses not to correct them on verbal abuse or even picking up after themselves or doing anything around home. He says he does not want them to not want to come around him. What or how am I to approach this situation?

Dealing with Parents Who Are Enablers
by: Laura Ramirez

The best advice that I can give to you is to tell your husband that enabling his children's behavior is a form of neglect because he's failing to teach them how to be responsible adults. Children need to learn to clean up after themselves, take responsibility for their choices, self-reflect and treat others with respect. A parent can teach all these things with love and kindness (see my parenting book for ideas). If he doesn't teach them how to do these things, they will struggle in their personal and professional relationships for the rest of their lives.
