Surname for new baby in step family

by Skyjulie
(UK)

Hello. I have a 10 year old daughter and a new partner. We have been living together for about a year and I am now pregnant. The relationship between my partner and my daughter is improving. It was terrible at one point - with him just ignoring her. But we have worked on it and it is better.

We are about to have a baby. My daughter is excited. She says that she does not mind if the baby takes his surname, or ours. I would like some help to make this decision. This is his first child, so he really wants the baby to have his surname.

I am concerned that he may favour the baby over my daughter and them sharing a surname will accentuate a divide in our new family. I'm worried about difficulties I may come across having two children with different surnames. I would welcome any feedback - opinions, experience, anything that will help us make a decision. Many thanks!
