Out of Control 3 year old

My son hits, suffocates, has pushed me down the steps, and does not listen. Even if I discipline him, he just goes right back to doing it all. I'm very frustrated.

His father abandoned him 2 yrs ago and I had to go away for a year and am now home and have been home for 6 months now. Does that have anything to do with his out of control behavior?
