Gender Specific School Assignment

My daughter was assigned a boy colonial character to portray in the school's wax museum. She is really upset and worried what others will think of her. Her teacher said that there was not any important women during that time. Should I pursue to have her character changed to a girl? There were some girl characters who were randomly selected by the teacher.
