No need to cut it down because it'll just grow back awkward. Embrace the thickness, you don't want your child thinking something is wrong with her hair.
Try a few long layers to give it shape. Look at sites which discuss hair texturizes of biracial/multiracial children. Remember that her hair needs a good moisterizer in order to keep it from breaking.
Relaxing the hair makes it the hair shaft much more fragile so a good conditioner and daily moisterizer either used in the morning or night will keep her hair healthy. Covering hair with a scarf at night will make it more manageable for styling in the morning.
