Baby Names - Dakotah Sage

by Laura

What do the names mean?

Dakotah comes from the Dakota tribe (or Lakota) and means "friend or ally of the people."

Sage was a compromise because my husband is Native American and I am white. In his culture, sage is used to clear and cleanse the air during ceremony, while in the white culture, a sage is a wiseman.

What was your inspiration?

A glimpse into the kind of man my then unborn child would grow to be. Since the baby's name is used to "call him," I believe that what you call him, also evokes the qualities associated with the name.

Tell us about your child.

Dakotah was a high-energy, spirited child as a baby and young child. He is growing into a smart, confident and caring young man who is discovering who he is and what he stands for. He is very outgoing, funny and is into baseball. We are still as close as we were when he was two because we live the principles outlined in my parenting book Keepers of the Children: Native American Wisdom and Parenting.

I hope what I have written inspires you to think carefully about which baby names you consider for your child.
