Baby Constipation - Baby Constipation Remedy Question & Answer

Baby Constipation

Dear Laura

I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what to use for baby constipation. My son has not had a bowel movement since 07/21/06 and it is now 07/26/06. I've tried putting 1.5 T. of light Karo syrup in his bottles, I've tried giving him prunes. He is on Good Start Supreme Soy formula and he takes 1 t. of rice cereal after his bottle. He is 3.5 months old. His doctor wants to give him a prescription laxative and I am afraid to do that. Neither me nor my husband like taking a prescription unless it is necessary. Please help!

Dear Cindy,

Constipation in a baby or newborn is uncomfortable and painful for the child and frightening to the parents. Since the colon is the depository for waste, toxins and bacteria, when bowels fail to move, these materials can be reabsorbed by tissues and nearby organs. This is why it is crucial to pay attention to the frequency of a child's BMs.

Breast fed babies have bowel movements more frequently than formula fed babies who may have them every three to five days. One thing you didn't mention is whether you have changed your baby's formula recently. A change in formula can cause baby constipation. If the formula you are using is a powder, make sure that you're not packing the scoops when measuring them out. You should measure baby formula the same way you measure flour—do not compress it when measuring.

If it has been unusually hot where you live (which seems to be a trend across the nation), this can also cause slowing of the bowels. Even though your child has not had a bowel movement, you should still make sure that he is eating regularly and give him a small bottle filled with water to help him have a BM.

Baby Constipation and Karo Syrup:

You've tried prunes and karo syrup and this hasn't worked. If you want to avoid giving your baby a prescription, try a glycerine suppository. Put some K-Y jelly on a suppository and put it in his rectum. Hold his buns together so it does not come out. Then you may want to give him a warm bath to relax him and help him have a BM. One word of warning: he may have his BM in the tub.

A better solution that does not involve putting things up your baby's butt or cleaning poop out of the tub is this natural baby constipation remedy that is a safe and effective digestion tonic.
